STREAMKEEPERS ON BOWEN

The Streamkeepers Program was developed as an initiative of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The objectives of the program are as follows:

  • Provide volunteers with the training and support required to protect and restore local aquatic habitat;
  • Educate the public about the importance of watershed resources;
  • Encourage communication and cooperation in watershed management.

The Pacific Streamkeepers Federation (PSkF) is a non-profit society formed to provide education and support to the many local volunteer Streamkeeper groups around the Province that are implementing the Program. PSkF have trained several volunteers from the Bowen Island Fish & Wildlife Club who have commenced surveying and monitoring Bowen streams. A plan of streams to be surveyed is being developed and the considerable data, including natural & manmade features, habitat quality, water chemistry, aquatic insect & fish surveys, collected on each section of each stream will be input to a Fisheries & Oceans database. This "baseline" data will be compared with future measurements at "benchmark" locations in order to establish trends in habitat quality.

The Bowen Streamkeepers volunteer group does not have financial or people resources to perform more than limited habitat improvement work but, where appropriate, can recommend action programs to various governmental and private organizations.
